Laboratory for Engineered Materials & Structures

The Laboratory for Engineered Materials & Structures (LEMS) at the Department of Aerospace Engineering of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) focuses on the design and synthesis of advanced materials and structures exhibiting unconventional mechanical behavior. Our research leverages fundamental principles of geometry, symmetry, and structural interactions to precisely control material responses under dynamic loading conditions, particularly involving wave propagation and vibrations.
We employ a physics-based, bottom-up approach to develop nontrivial building blocks and systems that could transcend the performance limitations of traditional materials. By integrating theoretical modeling, numerical simulations, and rigorous experimental validation, we advance the fundamental understanding of engineered systems. Our work aims to innovate solutions for a wide range of applications in aerospace, mechanical, and related engineering disciplines.
